When I was younger, I was big on native american religions (I'm a bit Cherokee), so I went about it the hard way; I plopped myself down in the middle of nowhere in Alaska and sat around until an animal approached me. Thankfully it was an otter and not something more undignified (ground squirrel x_x) or dangerous (black bear...nylak for breakfast), even though I'd chosen the spot specifically hoping for a wolf (fat chance of that).

Although over the years I've spoken with others who have acquired their spirit guides through more sane methods, basically through meditation and the like.
